Social Services V1 Bystanders, Installation view at US|IS (Urban Sidewalk | Installation Space), New Orleans
I am an artist, educator and curator who engages archiving, interdisciplinary collaboration, participatory practices, and media theory to address social and political systems of representation. My work combines still photography, video, text, audio, music, performance and non-traditional documentary materials. I exhibit at national and international art venues, as well as distribute my work through web creations, context-specific installations, and community-based actions.
From 2012 to 2018, I founded and directed BUREAU of CHANGE in New Orleans, the alternative higher education project in collaborative digital media as a form of social practice, where I was lead faculty. Prior academic appointments include full time faculty and Digital Art area head at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge and visiting artist residencies at Columbia University, New York and University of California-Santa Cruz. Guest lectures and workshops include Harvard Innovation Lab, New York University, University of Sussex, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, University of Texas, Society of Photographic Education Annual Conference, Hand-in-Glove, FemTechNet, and Aicon Gallery, among others.
I have presented one-person exhibitions and site-specific installations at venues such as Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans; EdLab at Columbia University, New York; Sesnon Gallery at the University of California-Santa Cruz; FotoFest, Houston; and Ashé Power House, New Orleans, and have shown in group exhibitions at Material Art Fair, Mexico City; Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; Arthouse (now known as The Contemporary), Austin; Exit Art, New York; Galerie Mycroft, Paris; Galeria Cozhina at Universidade do Porto, Portugal; and Open Society Institute Moving Walls; among others.
Features and reviews of my work have appeared in National Public Radio, San Francisco Chronicle, Al Jazeera, Artnet, Rhizome, Brooklyn Rail, Glasstire, Artblog, Pelican Bomb, Houston Chronicle, New York Magazine, New Orleans Art Review, and the post-9/11 literary survey A Foreigner Carrying in the Crook of His Arm a Tiny Bomb published by Duke University Press. Open Society Institute, Louisiana State University, Fotofest International, Puffin Cultural Foundation, and Kresge College at UCSC are supporters of my past work, through grants and commissions.
